Description
A magnificent pair of 19th-century French silver-plated candelabras, expertly crafted during the Napoleon III era circa 1860. Executed in the opulent Rococo Revival (Louis XV) taste, these monumental pieces feature sweeping asymmetrical scrollwork, deeply hand-chased foliate ornamentation, and prominent armorial cartouches highlighting their noble provenance. Each candelabra supports three dramatically curved, organic branch arms finished with coiling tendrils and foliate molding, leading to stylized floral candle sockets set atop cast acanthus bobechées and textured drip trays designed to catch wax. The central baluster stem exhibits a dynamic serpentine twist adorned with high-relief acanthus leaves, scroll motifs, and elegant fluting that draws the eye upward to the central light. The heavy, high-domed, shaped base rests on a molded step-edge decorated with blooming floral sprays and C-scroll motifs, while the front of each base displays an exquisite engraved cartouche bearing a coat of arms with a heraldic eagle or phoenix finished in subtle gilt accents, underscoring its aristocratic origin. Built with a heavy cast-metal core and hand-turned threaded rod assemblies, these pieces exemplify 19th-century French metalsmithing techniques and remain in excellent antique condition throughout. The original silver plating retains remarkable brightness and depth, complimented by a rich natural patina in the recessed details that accentuates the high-relief carving, along with minor, age-appropriate high-point silver wear consistent with careful handling over a century of gentle care.
