Description

An exceptional Edwardian sterling silver Monteith design punch bowl made in 1903 by the renowned silversmiths John Round & Son Ltd of Sheffield. This magnificent antique centerpiece bowl is modeled after the classic late 17th-century architectural style, characterized by its distinctive scalloped, crenellated rim designed to allow wine glasses to be suspended rim-down into ice water to chill before serving. The body features alternating concave fluted pales and high-polished segments extending downwards into a softly rounded basin, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow across its mirror-like surfaces. The entire form is elevated on a substantial, stepped circular spreading foot decorated with elegant reeded borders, providing both stability and historical gravitas.

The exterior upper rim displays a full set of crisp, deeply struck British hallmarks. These include the maker’s mark ‘JR’ inside a rectangular punch for John Round & Son Ltd, the Sheffield Assay Office crown town mark, the Lion Passant certifying sterling silver purity, and the Edwardian date letter ‘l’ in a shield corresponding to the year 1903. Combining superb gauge, structural balance, and flawless preservation, this masterwork represents a premier example of early 20th-century English silversmithing, making it an extraordinary presentation centerpiece for collectors or a striking operational punch bowl for formal dining spaces.
