19th Century Antique Victorian Large Oval Sterling Silver Bowl London 1883 Martin Hall & Co Ltd

Description

Large oval Victorian silver bowl designed with a gadroon wavy edged border and decorated with stunning central hanging galleried ribbons.  The lower section of the bowl has elegant floral themed hand embellishing and the corners (ovals) have stylish drop ring lion mask handles.

Condition:  Excellent throughout

Note:   The crest is undoubtedly for Towneley of Towneley Hall, Lancashire but the motto appears to be a variant on theirs, TENEZ LE VRAI.  As the Townelyes of Townley Hall died out in the male line by 1878, the crest is likely to be that of a member of a cadet branch, that of Dutton Hall, Lancashire.  Of these, it was most likely engraved for the Rev. Charles Francis Townley (1856–1930), who married Alice Rosalinde Murray Pratt in 1885, shortly after the date mark on the bowl.  Charles Francis was the eldest son of Charles Watson Townley below.
