Description
Stunning pair of Victorian basket-style wine bottle coasters, featuring ornate interlaced wire work galleries and applied cast grape and vine motif borders. Each coaster is masterfully engineered with openwork, criss-cross trellis or basket style framework. The bases are solid rich turned hardwood inserts traditionally carved from walnut or mahogany – carved with subtle concentric geometric rings. Originally known in the Georgian and Victorian eras as “wine slides” these pieces are as functional as they are decorative. They are designed to let heavy bottles/decanters slide smoothly across a bare wood surfaces while safely catching condensation and wine drips, protecting fine linen tablecloths or furniture from stains.
