Description
An exquisite piece of antique silverware, this neoclassical octagonal (irregular form) tea caddy has timeless symmetry with ornate brightcut engraved borders with laurel leaf bands both on the upper and lower borders. The center front has a medallion cartouche adorned with a scrolling beaded surround border highlights the front fascia in which sits an original hand engraved crest depicting a heraldic winged beast (griffin/pegasus) emerging from a ducal coronet. The lid is custom-fitted to match the octagonal form of the main body, stepping upward into a smooth inwardly curved (concave) dome. This pagoda-style profile provides a dramatic, elegant lift to the pieces overall proportions and at the absolute apex rests a fully three-dimensional finely cast textured pineapple finial which sprouts from a flared starburst-like base of sculpted calyx leaves.
